Little Learners Books Review

Last month, Parragon Books launched 'Little Learners', a new range of vibrant, playful and interactive books for babies and toddlers. They have been developed in partnership with educational experts and each book in the range focuses on a different level of child development, encouraging learning and key skills during their crucial early years. The books have been created in seven fun formats including Slide and See, Finger Puppet, Touch And Feel Board Books, First Words Foam Books, Bath Book, Cloth Books and Stroller Books so there is a huge variety to choose from. We were sent a selection from the Little Learners range courtesy of Parragon Books and we were more than pleased with them.

Night Night (First Words) Foam Book illustrated by Natalie Marshall £2.99
Night Night is a soft foam book designed for children aged 1+ and is perfect for a bedtime story as it features cute animal characters in pastel colours and introduces all of the first bedtime words. The pages are stuck to foam which makes the book feel incredibly light and all corners/edges have been smoothed to make it easy for little fingers to hold and safe to leave with baby.

I Can Share (Slide & See) Board Book illustrated by Giuditta Gaviraghi £4.99
I Can Share is a board book with interactive sliding tabs that teaches little ones all about manners and increases their knowledge of the world around them. Friendly animal characters are present on every page to mention basic principles and these ideas are then reinforced by fun messages and images on the pull out pictures. This slide and see feature really engages little ones in the book and keeps their interest for longer.  I Can Share is suitable for children aged 1+ and helps to develop hand eye coordination, first words and communication.

Animals (Touch & Feel) Board Book £4.99
This book is suitable for babies aged 6+ months and has been specifically created to promote children's creativity and sense of touch whilst improving their knowledge of the world around them and learning first words. From the dog's soft fur and the bunny's cute tail to the glittery shiny fish, there is plenty to occupy little minds and delight little fingers.

Overall, i think Little Learners are a fantastic and versatile series of books, each one featuring colourful pictures, simple text and interactive elements to keep little ones engaged and stimulated. They aim to make key learning skills easy for parents as well, with icons on each book indicating its learning function. We have thoroughly enjoyed reading our selection of Little Learners books, they were an absolute delight and i cannot wait to go out and buy some more from the collection.

The full range is available to purchase at all major retailers including Tesco, WH Smith, Sainsburys, Amazon and Early Learning Centre with books ranging in price from £2.99 to £6.99. Further titles are planned for release in August 2012 and March 2013.

My Week That Was

Well it's Monday again and i know i say this all the time but i really can't believe how quickly the week's are flying by. Riley's 23 weeks old today which seems impossible but it's true and it amazes me how fast he is growing up and changing every day now.

Anyway, joining in with this fab linky hosted by my good friend Katie over at Mummy Daddy And Me Makes Three, here is my week that was:

On Monday, we had a surprise visit from my mum who stopped by on her way to picking my brothers up from school. I hadn't seen her for a week so was nice to have a little catch up and Riley enjoyed some 'Nanny Cuddles'.

I don't know about anyone else but we've had awful weather here lately, so Tuesday was a 'stay indoors out of the rain' day which i didn't mind too much as it gave me plenty of time to play with Riley. We got sent some fantastic Little Learner Books to review so we've had fun reading through those together this past week and investing in lots of tummy time on his play mat.

Wednesday was another gloomy day but i met up with one of my mummy friends and we took our boys to a new baby massage course being held at our local Sure Start centre. It was very relaxing and a great opportunity to meet some other new mummies. You can read more about our experience here and for any one who hasn't tried baby massage before, i would highly recommend doing so.

Thursday and Friday were also stay at home days which i didn't appreciate as it gave me no excuse not to get the housework done!

On Saturday, my sister and i took Tia and Riley to a birthday party and in the evening i settled down with the laptop to catch up on some blogs.

As for Sunday, all i can say is boxes boxes boxes! Lots of packing, brown tape and more boxes as we're moving to our new house this week! Just a little bit excited about this!

And that was my week that was. If you fancy joining in or having a read of the other blogs that have linked up then head over to Mummy Daddy And Me Makes Three .

Baby Massage Week 1 - Legs & Feet

Riley and i were thrilled to commence a 5 week baby massage course at our local Sure Start Centre on Wednesday and i have to say we both thoroughly enjoyed it so i thought i would share with you all what we learn over the forthcoming weeks. Through massage you can increase awareness of how your baby communicates and learn ways to support your baby's development and wellbeing in the first few months. Baby massage has been practiced all over the world for thousands of years and there are many benefits, so for those of you that have never tried it i would highly recommend doing so.

The Benefits Of Regular Massage May:
  • Help you and your baby to bond and understand eachother better.
  • Soothe babies and reduce crying.
  • Aid digestion and help relieve other issues such as colic, wind and constipation.
  • Enhance body awareness and help develop muscle tone, coordination and mobility.
  • Help babies to sleep for longer.
  • Boost parents confidence in handling their baby.
  • Improve skin texture and suppleness.
  • Help calm and relax both parent and baby.
  • Relieve nasal congestion and teething discomfort.
  • Boost the immune system.
Getting Started:
  • Choose a time when your baby is awake and alert.
  • Choose a warm room with no draughts, a peaceful atmosphere and no distractions.
  • Ensure that lighting is dimmed and not too bright.
  • Use a pure almond oil, light vegetable oil or olive oil as they are kinder to baby's skin and are perfume free.
  • Use a thick towel or a soft changing mat or rug.
  • Place your baby on their back, feet towards you. Let them know the massage is about to begin by warming the oil between your palms where they can see it.
Only massage your baby when they are awake, alert and ready to engage. There are times when your baby will not be in the mood for a massage (eg. hungry, tired, unwell) so it's important to respect them, watch and respond to their body language and adapt the moves to match their individual needs or wants. It's important to make massage a happy, relaxing and special time for both mummy and baby.

With one hand holding the ankle, use the other to glide up the front, wrap around one of your baby's thighs and pull down to the ankle, squeezing gently as if you are 'milking' the leg. Repeat one hand after the other so you are continually stroking and be sure to get into all of the creases especially behind the knee. Repeat with other leg.

Use your thumbs to draw small circles around baby's knees and the ankle bones on outsides of their legs before moving on to baby's feet.
Using your thumbs, massage the heel of baby's foot in a circular motion, pressing firmly so it does not tickle. Then make gentle strokes from heel to each toe.

To relax and uncurl baby's toes, push your forefinger softly across the heel and also at the base of the toes. Next take each toe between your thumb and forefinger and gently pull until your fingers slip off the end.

To finish of this section use your palm to press in to the heel and run your hand up and over the toes.

Lastly, take the foot and rotate it a few times in each direction, then stroke the top of baby's foot from the ankle down to the toes.

Switch feet and repeat the steps.

And that was the end of yesterday's class. Next week we're moving on to the chest and tummy area so be sure to come back and visit for more tips on the art of baby massage.

If the course sounds like something you'd like to try for yourself, speak with your midwife/health visitor or contact your local Sure Start Centre. It's free of charge and not only benefits baby but gives you a chance to socialise and meet with other parents too.

Riley's First Cuddle With Mummy

(First Cuddle With Mummy On 23.11.2011)
For most new parents the first cuddle happens the moment your child is born and that skin to skin contact ignites a love and bond that will stay with them forever. For parents of premature babies this precious moment is put on hold and could be days or weeks away depending on how sick their baby is.

After 3 days of being cooped up in his plastic incubator surrounded by wires, drips, CPAP oxygen tubes and face mask, Riley ventured out into the real world for his first cuddle with mummy. This was a momentous occasion and an incredibly overwhelming experience that Riley seemed to respond well too. He was so tiny and fragile and i was paranoid that i'd hold him too tight or hurt him somehow, but the nurses stayed close by and offered lots of support and reassurance. It was such a comfort to feel close to him.

They had told me that he could stay out of the incubator for as long as he remained stable and maintained his body temperature to a sufficient level. Sleeping and conserving energy is important to their health, growth and devlopment in the early days and even the tiniest exertion can affect their heart rate and oxygen saturation levels. Having him out of the incubator meant that he was having to work hard at maintaining his own body temperature, using up vital calories he needed to use to grow.

I wanted to hold him forever but after 15 minutes his SAT's and temperature were dropping so he had to be returned to the incubator. Those 15 minutes were precious though and regardless of my desire to keep him with me for longer, sometimes as a parent you just have to sacrifice your own needs and wants for the welfare of your child. I had to put him first.

Listography - Top 5 Wishes For My Child

This week's Listography challenge set by the lovely Kate at Kate Takes 5 is - Top 5 Wishes For My Child.

If Riley could be granted 5 wishes from his very own fairy godmother what would i wish for him?

1. Health & Happiness
If nothing else, i hope that above all my little Monkey experiences a long life full of good health and happiness. Children learn by our example what is important and i hope that my nurturing, method of parenting and attitude bestow upon him the ingredients and qualities needed to be happy and healthy in life.

2. Strength & Courage
He will never know the true amount of inner strength and courage he has already demonstrated to us, i hope that it remains throughout his life and he never forgets that he CAN dig deep and push through the hardest times. He's proved already what a little fighter he can be and how strong his little body really is, his sheer determination has got him where he is today and long may it continue.

3. Achieves His Dreams
I wish and hope that he realises his true potential, trusts his gut and follows his heart to achieve his dreams.  I want him to live his life to the fullest, make it what he wants it to be and have no regrets. He can achieve anything, including his dreams if he believes in himself.

4. Experiences Love
I hope he meets that special someone and experiences what it is like to fall and be in love. Whether he is gay or straight, i hope he knows that i will love and support him regardless and that his happiness means more to me than anything. I hope that he grows to be a good man with strong family values and that he and his partner love eachother unconditionally and treat eachother with respect, honesty and integrity.

5. He Knows
I want him to know just how much his mummy and daddy love him. I want him to know how incredibly proud we are of him every single day. I want him to know that he has changed our lives for the better and made us better people because of it. I want him to know that he can achieve anything he sets his mind to. I want him to know that the possibilities in life are endless, the only limits will be the ones he places on himself. I want him to know that no matter where his life takes him he will always have a family and always have a home.

If you want to join in, head on over to Kate's blog and link your post up!

My Pregnancy Story Part 1 - Finding Out

Let me take you back to Thursday 19th May 2011, a day that started off like any other but one that would alter my life forever. I was living at home, I had been in a relationship with Mr B for a little over four weeks and i had just celebrated my 25th birthday. I didn't have a care in the world, but all that was about to change.

I set off to work like i did every morning, sat down at my desk, powered the old computer up..... you get the idea! *ping* a reminder alert popped up on my iphone 'No menstrual cycle recorded for this month' (now would probably be a good time to point out that i'm a bit anal and record such information using an app on the phone). Anyhow, i remember thinking no menstrual cycle recorded for this month? how could that be? I'd been on the contraceptive pill since i was 16, my periods always came like clockwork, i was meticulous at keeping a log of them. Maybe i'd just forgotten to enter the data? or there was a technical fault with the application? Yes that would be it, clearly there was a malfunction.

Dear Riley - 5 Months Old

Dear Riley,

Weight: 12lb 4oz
Clothes Size: 0-3 Months
Nappy Size: Pampers Size 3

My little monkey, you are 5 months old already and mummy's not quite sure where that time has gone but i can barely remember what my life was like without you in it. You are changing and growing before my eyes every single day and it makes me incredibly proud to see how far you've come in such a short space of time.

You've given us lots more smiles this month, not windy smiles but real smiles and what beautiful ones they are too.I love the way your face lights up into a huge grin every time you see me or your daddy. The highlight of my day is first thing in the morning when i can hear you stirring in your room, you give a tiny 'i'm awake' cry and the minute i walk into the nursery and peer in to your cot, you give me the biggest smile possible and it just melts my heart every time.

You have really started to make and hold eye contact with people and seem to be a very social baby who loves attention and being around people. None more so than your big cousin Tia, you are the apple of her eye and i'm in no doubt that she's yours. I just know you two are going to grow up to be the best of friends.

You stay awake for longer periods during the day now and have also begun to take interest in a few toys and objects, especially the hanging ones within easy reach on your bouncer and play gym.

You started teething this month and despite showing no interest in a dummy previously and against my better judgement, i've found it to be the only way of comforting and soothing you so as long as your happy, mummy's happy.

This past month has seen you become more alert and interactive and i can't wait to see what the next month will bring.

As ever Riley, keep happy, keep safe and keep healthy.

Dear Riley - 4 Months Old

Dear Riley,

Weight: 11lb 2oz
Clothes Size: Newborn
Nappy Size: Pampers Size 2

You have amazed me with your progress this past month and you continue to become more alert and aware of your surroundings every day. You now fully recognise mummy and daddy and can clearly see across the room as you have begun tracking our movements as we come and go.

Though we have not established a bedtime routine as such, you seem to be a really good sleeper and settle down of an evening about 7-8pm and then sleep through until 5-6 in the morning. You also spend the majority of the day sleeping, which your health visitor says is perfectly normal as you're body's working hard to grow and catch up. I forget sometimes that if you had arrived when you were due you would only be 1 1/2 months about now. That's a big difference.

You have taken a severe dislike to tummy time and haven't really shown much interest in your toys yet either, but you do like to lay on your back on your activity mat and look at yourself in the mirror. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come and please don't turn out like daddy and take longer than mummy in the bathroom.

You are still a pretty easy, laid back baby with the sweetest of temperaments and i love the feeling of knowing i played some part in making you that way.

I had my first glimpse of a smile from you this month, which daddy sadly missed and i haven't seen one since from you but i think next month we'll be the month we see some real changes and achievements from you.

We have some exciting times ahead of us little man, so as always stay safe, stay strong and stay healthy.

Dear Riley - 3 Months Old

Dear Riley,

Weight: 8lb 4oz
Clothes Size: Newborn
Nappy Size: Pampers Size 1

How is it possible that you are already 3 months old? The last few weeks have been amazing and we're adjusting to a day to day life at home. You still feel like a newborn to me and in a sense you are, but you've changed so much in such a short period of time. You are growing and filling out nicely now and we can finally put you in some of the many items of clothing you've been given since you were born.

You've had a few episodes of projectile vomiting and diarrhea this month which isn't so pleasant for mummy and has resulted in numerous outfit changes (for me and for you!) and repeated washing cycles, but no one said it was going to be easy and it'll certainly never be perfect so we keep on muddling through.

You're an unbelievably happy, content and loving little boy and you're very alert so like to take in everything around you. When you're not sleeping, you love having cuddles with mummy and daddy and spending time in your bouncer. You've smiled on a couple of occasions but we're pretty sure these are windy smiles and not proper smiles so we can't wait for a real one to arrive.

You have a dislike for loud noises and waking up from naps, but don't worry, we all get a little cranky sometimes and the good times with you definitely outweigh the bad.

Each day with you brings a whole new meaning of love into our lives and we feel blessed to call you ours.

As ever Riley, keep happy, keep safe and keep healthy.

Love From Mummy xxx

Dear Riley - 2 Months Old

Dear Riley,

Weight: 6lb 1oz
Clothes Size: Early Baby (up to 7lbs)
Nappy Size: Pampers Micro

You're now 2 months old and finally home where you belong. Although you celebrated your first Christmas in hospital, we had you with us in time for the new year and i couldn't have wished for a better start to 2012. The nurses made Christmas Day a special one for you and we arrived to find that Santa had visited you overnight and left you a personalised stocking full of presents. These have all been tucked safely away in your memory box ready to share with you when you're older.

You made fast progress during your last two weeks in hospital and it amazed me at how quickly you grew. Before i knew it, your nasal gastric tube had been removed and you were being solely fed by bottle. Although you were given mummy's expressed breast milk up until this point, unfortunately i wasn't producing enough to keep up with your demands and you weren't gaining as much weight as the doctors had hoped so you were switched to a special high calorie formula specifically made for premature babies. It had an immediate effect and after 'rooming in' at the hospital with you for one night, you were discharged by your consultant on 30th December 2011. Those first 6 weeks of worrying, sleepless nights, x-rays, brain scans, daily trips to the hospital and numerous consultations were worth it just to hear 7 precious words from your consultant 'your baby's ready to go home now'. I knew there would still be a long way to go and further hurdles for us to overcome but i was elated and had an overwhelming sense of relief.

Bringing you home was both an exciting and daunting prospect. I knew how to look after you of course but to suddenly have the safety net of constant monitoring and a support network of nurses/doctors stripped away was very scary.

Daddy and i were now on our own.

Although you have grown significantly since your arrival,  in our eyes you are still so tiny and fragile and we worry constantly about whether you are drinking enough, warm enough or putting on enough weight. You pretty much sleep all of the time and wake for feeds every 3-4 hours. You love cuddles and bath time and are beginning to recognize our voices.

You have been inundated with cards, presents and visitors since being home and every one has been so eager to meet you. Thanks to your Great-Grandad, you have people following your progress from all over the world and it's plain to see that mummy and daddy aren't the only people who think you're a very special little boy and love you dearly.

I tell you this all the time but i am incredibly proud of you Riley and thank my lucky stars every day that you're here, happy and so far, perfectly healthy.

Dear Riley - 1 Month Old

Dear Riley,

Weight: 3lb 12oz
Clothes Size: Tiny Baby (Up to 5lbs)
Nappy Size: Pampers Micro

Well you are officially one month old and what a month it's been, especially as you are still meant to be growing and developing inside of mummy's tummy. Your early arrival has had a huge impact on my life and i'd be lying if i said these first few weeks haven't been a rollercoaster of emotions and mentally and physically draining. No mummy wants to be separated from their child or see them struggling and leaving you behind in the hospital every single day is the hardest thing i've ever had to do.

You weighed a mere 2lb 13oz at birth and were wheeled straight off to NICU by nurses for further tests, assessments and observations. It was a full 2 hours before mummy and daddy finally got to meet you. You were all curled up in your incubator wired up to various monitors/machines and hooked up to drips. You looked so tiny, so fragile and yet so perfect and we fell in love with you instantly.

I find it hard to comprehend that you are actually here, i carried you inside of me for 30 weeks and now here you are, the tiniest little person i've ever seen out in the big wide world. The hospital might look like a scary place but you're being such a brave boy and you are never alone, even when mummy and daddy aren't with you there's always a nurse standing by to look after you and i'm sure there are angels watching over you from above. One day when you're bigger i'll bring you back to meet these fantastic people who have been taking such good care of you and keeping you safe from harm. I thank them every day for keeping you alive and well.

I'd spend every moment with you if i could but it's just not possible under these circumstances and i promise to make it up to you when you're home. You've grown and changed so much over the past four weeks and have progressed from NICU to SCBU and now HDU, that's the last room before home time. Not only that, but yesterday you finally came out of the incubator and into your own cot. You will never understand just how amazing that is to see. You've proved already how strong you can be and what a little fighter you are and you make me incredibly proud of you.

Keep growing, keep healthy, keep safe and come home soon Riley, everyone is desperate to meet you.

The First Ever Photograph

Many of you will already be aware of the fact that back on 21st November 2011 my little Monkey decided that he just couldn't wait any longer to meet his mummy and daddy and put in an appearance 10 weeks early. I think it's safe to say that the experience was traumatic for the both of us and i will go into more detail with this when my 'birth story' is published, but as with most premature babies he had numerous health complications and was whisked straight off to NICU without me barely catching a glimpse of him.

It wasn't until a couple of hours later that one of the midwives gave me the most precious gift ever, unfortunately not my bundle of joy, but the next best thing, his first ever photograph and my first proper look at him.

Two beautiful blue eyes, a cute button nose, ten tiny little fingers and ten tiny little toes. I didn't know whether to smile or cry, I knew he was in safe hands but they weren't mine and all i wanted was to hold him in my arms, take all of the bad stuff away and tell him that everything was going to be okay. That's what mummies are supposed to do.

It was at that moment that i fully understood what it meant to truly love somebody so much that you would give your life for them.

There really is no greater love than a mother's love.

Milkysnugz Bottle Holder Review

Feeding can be a very stressful time for mummies like me who have a premature baby and it often carries with it a huge source of anxiety and concern. One of the main priorites when caring for a preterm baby is ensuring that they receive enough nutrients through breast milk or formula to grow and thrive. Arriving 10 weeks early and weighing 21b 13oz, Monkey was too small and too sick to be breastfed so was given my milk through a tube until his sucking reflex had developed enough to be fed from the breast or with a bottle.

I came across the Milkysnugz range when we were introducing Monkey to bottlefeeding and when the lovely lady behind it all offered to send us one for review, i was thrilled. For those of you that have never heard of Milkysnugz they are a range of cute and cosy bottle-holders that make feeding time alot easier for both mummy and baby.

The Milkysnugz range has been designed and developed specifically to make feeding time a more enjoyable experience and will help baby's transition from breast feeding to bottle feeding. There are six adorable animal characters to choose from, each with their own story and personality traits which can be found on the Milkysnugz website.

We were sent Elephant, the wisest of the Milkysnugz who loves cuddles, splashing at bath time and protecting babies with his trunk. Little details like this are what makes this product more personable and stand out from the crowd. It's not just a feeding aid or a bottle holder, it's a comforter, a companion and a soft cuddly toy for baby to snuggle up to when sleeping.

I was very impressed with the product, it's made from high quality materials, versatile, durable and machine washable. Whats more, the Milkysnugz feature a zip for easy access to the bottle and a hook to restrict movement. I can't fault the product at all, it really is a fantastic creation and one that i will be highly recommending to mummies everywhere.

The Milkysnugz range is available to purchase direct from their website at www.milkysnugz.co.uk . Each character is sold seperately and priced at £19.99 including P&P.

Welcome To Love From Mummy

As a twenty something first time mummy to a beautiful little boy i'm not too afraid to admit that i've found adjusting to life as the parent of a premature baby a little daunting and overwhelming at times. Becoming a mummy is scary enough without the added pressure and overload of information that comes with a 10 week premature baby. Having him taken away straight after birth and being seperated from him for 6 weeks was the hardest and most terrifying experience of my life and i'm just thankful that i had such incredible family and friends to guide and support me through it.

It makes every moment with him now that more precious and i want to be able to look back with him in years to come and remember every one. I want him to know what impact his arrival had on my life, how he changed me for the better and how incredibly proud i am of him every single day. As he grows, changes and develops before my eyes i am experiencing new things, overcoming hurdles, encountering more 'firsts' and capturing special moments all the time.

This is my little space to not only be me, but give you all an insight into our daily lives together, record his memories and milestones, voice my opinions, express my feelings and share my experiences of being a mummy for the first time. I hope to unleash my creative side with a variety of funny, inspiring, thoughtful and helpful posts for you aswell as guidance and reviews on products, classes and money saving tips.

I'm still learning the ropes, but i know that with a lot of hard work and tender loving care this blog will be everything i want it to be and i'll eventually know what i'm doing.

So please, sit back, visit us regularly and enjoy!
